Why does my bathroom always smell like wet plaster when it rains heavily?
Oct 14, 2011
You know that smell when plaster is freshly applied and still drying? I have lived here about 18 months and the bathroom was refitted and plastered before I moved in. In the summer it's fine but I have noticed that after heavy rain it smells like wet plaster. Could there be a damp problem or water getting in somewhere? There are no obvious signs of damp.
Your roof might be leaking above your bathroom and/or you may have a leak behind the bath panel or under the floorboards. You may have damp between the tiles and the boards that should be attached to the walls. You may have milldew - get some spray from the shops and blitz the grouting if you have black mould there. If there's a leak from above, it may be slowly spreading into the bathroom walls/floors/ceiling. It could also be your drains. If the drains overflow when it rains heavliy (e.g. due to blockages), the smell from the drains could be being pushed back up the pipes and into your bathroom. Check all the obvious places for a leak or a blocked drain problem.
